Shubunkin Goldfish

Shubunkins are a hardy, single-tailed goldfish with nacreous scales and a pattern known as calico. The Shubunkins are of Japanese origin. The Shubunkin was created by Yoshigoro Akiyama by crossing Calico telescope eye with a Comet goldfish and a Common goldfish. You can keep Shubunkins on their own, but they’re social fish. They don’t always shoal together, but they prefer the company of a school.

Shubunkin Goldfish are a great addition to an outdoor filtered pond, or a well-filtered indoor coldwater aquarium (while small and manageable). Shubunkins are very simple to care for and like common goldfish are great for beginners. Please be aware that the image is for illustration purposes only, you will receive a random selection of mixed gender Shubunkins of various colours and patterns.

How big do Shubunkin Goldfish get?

Shubunkin goldfish can grow to exceed 12 inches or 30cm as adults. You will need adequate space in your aquarium or pond to accommodate growth of Shubunkins. One fish per 25 litres is a good stocking guideline.

Can you keep Shubunkin Goldfish with Koi?
Yes, you can quite happily keep Shubunkin goldfish with Koi, as well as other coldwater species such as goldfish and sturgeon. You can also keep with fancy goldfish indoors, although they may out-compete slower swimming species for food.
